Abstract

This is a collection of the wartime photographs, largely taken by German military photographers or German officers and soldiers.

The photographs depict various moments of the day-to-day  occurrences in the German-occupied territories in Europe

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection of photo-documents comprises often a rare experience, showing both perspective, the one of the Germans and the other of the local population

Collection Historical Note

Photographs received from Bundesarchiv (German Federal Archiv) are integrated into the museum photo-panels, that is the core of the museum exhibition. They are also constitute one of the Archival Collections. These photo-documents reflect the wartime experience presented by the German military photographers, as German officers and soldiers.

Im Distrikt Galizien sind wie im Deutschen Reich sämtliche Lebensmittel und landwirtschaftliche Erzeugnisse bewirtschaftet!

The placard shows the appeal to German soldiers in the district of Galicia and other districts of the German Reich, which does not permit to buy or confiscate groceries and agricultural products as the soldiers receive their fixed rations.

KZ Sachsenhausen. - Die Häftlinge von Sachsenhausen wurden zu schwerer Arbeit im Klinker-Werk gezwungen, wo viele vor Erschöpfung zusammenbrachen und ermordet wurden.

Zur Einweihung der Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Sachsenhausen am 23. April 1961. - Vor den Toren Berlins, auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen faschistischen Konzentrationslagers Sachsenhausen bei Oranienburg, in das von 1936 bis Kriegsende 200.000 Menschen verschleppt wurden, entsteht - wie in Buchenwald und Ravensbrück - eine würdige Mahn- und Gedenkstätte.

Jeder Quadratmeter Boden ist hier vom Blut der 100.000 Toten durchtränkt, die im KZ Sachsenhausen mit seinen 73 aussenkommandos erschlagen, erhängt, erschossen, zu Tode geprügelt, durch erbarmunslose Sklavenarbeit zu Grunde gerichtet und vergast wurden. Doch gelang es den SS-Mördern nicht, den Widerstandswillen der politischen Häftlinge zu brechen. So wurde Sachsenhausen auch zur Stätte der großen internationalen Solidarität und des mutigen Kampfes gegen Faschismus und Krieg.

Aber Menschen in solch einem Zustand waren mir bisher noch nicht begegnet. Durch den Hunger völlig heruntergekommen, sahen junge 17-18-jährige Burschen wie Greise aus. Wasser in den Beinen, die bis zur Hüfte zur Unförmigkeit angeschwollen waren, monatelang vernachlässigte Wunden, mit irgendeinem schmutzigen Lappen bedeckt. Einem jungen Burschen war der ganze Oberschenkel bis zum Knie abgefault, eine schwarze stinkende Masse..."

Zur Einweihung der Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Sachsenhausen am 23. April 1961. - Vor den Toren Berlins, auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen faschistischen Konzentrationslagers Sachsenhausen bei Oranienburg, in das von 1936 bis Kriegsende 200.000 Menschen verschleppt wurden, entsteht - wie in Buchenwald und Ravensbrück - eine würdige Mahn- und Gedenkstätte.

Jeder Quadratmeter Boden ist hier vom Blut der 100.000 Toten durchtränkt, die im KZ Sachsenhausen mit seinen 73 aussenkommandos erschlagen, erhängt, erschossen, zu Tode geprügelt, durch erbarmunslose Sklavenarbeit zu Grunde gerichtet und vergast wurden. Doch gelang es den SS-Mördern nicht, den Widerstandswillen der politischen Häftlinge zu brechen. So wurde Sachsenhausen auch zur Stätte der großen internationalen Solidarität und des mutigen Kampfes gegen Faschismus und Krieg.

Pogromstimmung gegen Kommunisten, Sozialdemokraten und andere antifaschistische Kräfte, das waren die ersten Auswirkungen der Hitlerdiktatur.
