Abstract

This collection comprises correspondences, documents, and photographs pertaining to the Forchheimer family. Together these items cover the family’s life in Coburg, Germany and their eventual emigration to the United States in 1939.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection spans the first half of the twentieth-century beginning in 1899 with Moses Forchheimer’s German citizenship papers and ending with the 1945 U.S. naturalization of Emil and Bertha Forchheimer in Columbus, Ohio.  The various affidavits and copies of necessary paperwork point to the many obstacles faced by families as they attempted to flee Nazi Germany.

Collection Historical Note

The Rachel Green Papers primarily cover the lives of Emil and Bertha Forchheimer, and their successful attempt to emigrate from Nazi Germany in the late 1930s.  Emil was born in Gemüden am Main, Germany in 1890 to Moses and Rachel Forchheimer.  His wife Bertha, maiden name Kaiser, was born in Gotha seven years later.  After marrying in 1922 the couple settled in Coburg, Germany, where Emil had a furniture business.  The Forchheimers emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1939 with the help of Emil’s brother, Louis.  Louis Forchheimer resided in Alpine, Texas and lobbied for the emigration of his two brothers, Emil and Benno, along with their families.  This collection is comprised of various RG-73.01, Documents concerning Moses and Rachel Forchheimer, and the Kaiser family
