Abstract

This is a collection of the Jewish zionist periodical The Palestinian Post, published in the British-mandate Palestine from 1932 to 1948. The periodical continued under this title until 1950 when the title was changed to the Jerusalem Post.

Our collectin comprises issues from 1935, 1936 and 1945.

During its time as The Palestine Post, the publication supported the struggle for a Jewish homeland in Palestine and openly opposed British policy restricting Jewish immigration during the Mandate period. According to one commentator, "Zionist institutions considered the newspaper one of the most effective means of exerting influence on the British authorities".

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Palestinian Post reported international news, while focussing on the Palestinian developments and the state-building of Israel. It reflects on diplomatic relations in Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere. The periodical, stuffed by professional journalists, brouthg to its readership professional analysis and analitical article with regard to the rising danger of military conflict in Europe. This publication also reflected on the Italian and Nazi-German military advances and the on the situation of Jews in Europe and in the Middle East.

Collection Historical Note

The Palestine Post, was founded in 1932 by Gershon Agron. The name change occurred in 1950 to the Jerusalem Post.

An antecedent paper, The Palestine Bulletin was founded in January 1925 by Jacob Landau of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. It was owned by the Palestine Telegraphic Agency, which was in practice part of the JTA even though it was legally separate. On 1 November 1931, editorship of the Bulletin was taken over by American journalist Gershon Agronsky (later Agron). In March 1932, a dispute arose between Landau and Agronsky, which Agronsky resolved to settle by establishing an independent newspaper. However, Landau and Agronsky instead came to an agreement to transform the Bulletin into a new jointly owned newspaper. Accordingly, the Palestine Bulletin published its last issue on 30 November 1932 and The Palestine Post Incorporating The Palestine Bulletin appeared the following day, 1 December 1932. On 25 April 1933, the masthead was reduced to just The Palestine Post, though the newspaper continued to state its founding year as 1925 for at least a year afterwards.

The Jerusalem Post is a broadsheet newspaper based in Israel, publishing only English and French editions. Its predecessor, The Palestine Post, was founded in 1932 by Gershon Agron.

The issues from our Collection, namely from 1935, 1936 and 1945 pose a valuable historical source on the European, British, German, Italian foreign politics with the special emphasis to the Jewish Zionist cause in Palestine.

Biographical Note

Gershon Agron (1894–1959) was an Israeli newspaper editor and mayor of Jerusalem 1955–1959.

Gershon Agron (originally Agronsky) was born in the Ukraine and immigrated with his family to the United States at age five. He grew up in Philadelphia. During the First World War, he fought with the Jewish Legion in Palestine. From 1920 to 1921, he worked for the Press Office of the Zionist Commission. Until his immigration to Palestine in 1924, he worked as the editor of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and correspondent for several international press agencies, including The Times of London and the Manchester Guardian. In 1932, Agron founded The Palestine Post, an English-language newspaper that was renamed The Jerusalem Post in 1950. Among the paper's earliest reporters was Agron's nephew, Martin Agronsky, later a famous American television journalist.

On various occasions, Agron served as envoy of the World Zionist Organization. He was a member of the Jewish Agency delegation to the UN conference in San Francisco. In 1949–1951, Agron headed Israel's Government Information Service. In 1955, he was elected mayor of Jerusalem. He remained in office until his death in 1959. During his term, he played a key role in the development of the western sectors of the city.
