Abstract

This Record Group comprises collections of preparatory materials in the form of art-works and correspondences, all inall related to Erich Lichtblau creativity in the Theresienstadt ghetto and during the postwar period in Czechoslovakia and Israel.

Administrative/Biographical History

While living in Israel, Eli Leskly decided to recreate and provide expanded captions for the original watercolors he painted whilst in Theresienstadt Ghetto. He recreated more than seventy watercolors, using both watercolor and diluted ink. Though these recreations stemmed from the original watercolors, there were some notable variations with regard to the captions and slogans. By recreating these works, Leskly made them available for exhibitions in Israel. His first personal exhibition took place in Kibbutz Givat Chayim in Israel in 1978. His works also crossed the ocean in 1984, where they were displayed at the Jewish Community Building Galleries in Los Angeles, CA. Author: staff

Access Notes: Artworks from this record group are exhibited in the museum, as well as stored in the archive. A selection of Leskly's works can also be viewed in the library's special collection section.

Acquisition Note: The original watercolors and sketches from Leskly's period in the ghetto, as well as his enlarged and reconstructed replicas were purchased by two philanthropists from Los Angeles and donated to the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust in the mid-1980s.

Related Materials: Leskly’s paintings could be also found in the museums of Prague, Yad Vashem, and Beit Theresienstadt in Israel.

This record group contains the original watercolors and sketches created by Eli Leskly, also known as Erich Lichtblau, while in the Theresienstadt Ghetto, as well as in the postwar period in Czechoslovakia. The over 150 artworks held by the LA Museum of the Holocaust include watercolors and sketches from Leskly's period in the ghetto; small watercolors from the postwar period; and replicas of Theresienstadt pictorial diary from his period in Israel in the 1960s.
