Brief Description: The materials in this record group relate primarily to Dr. Julius Kühl's wartime service in the Polish consulate in Berne, Switzerland. These documents shed light on his activity, often done in cooperation with Jewish and other refugee organizations, with whom he provided aid to refugees and internees in the German-occupied countries and in other neutral countries. Also included in these materials is information about Kühl's efforts to rescue Jews from Poland, Hungary, and Romania. A good portion of the record group consists of correspondence with the Polish government in exile. There are documents in this record group that are issued by the Polish government in London, as well as reports of the Polish resistance organizations. Also within this record group are documents on the resistance movements, which include reports, correspondence, and underground publications issued by non-Jewish and Jewish resistance groups and organizations in German-occupied Europe.

Biographical Note for Kühl, Julius : During the war, Dr. Julius Kühl served at the Polish Consulate in Berne, Switzerland, who, in this position, often acted in cooperation with Jewish and other refugee organizations, providing aid to refugees and internees in the German-occupied countries and in the neutral countries. Dr. Kühl saved hundreds of his fellow Jews by helping and providing them with passports and visas; aiding their attempts to enter Switzerland; and cooperating with charitable Jewish organizations and prominent rescuers, such as Recha and Isaak Sternbuch.
