Collection Historical Note

Liselotte Melhorn was born on 5 December 1915 in Vienna, Austria. Liselotte’s maiden name is Kaufmann. She seems to have made her living from photography and attended a photography school/program in Vienna in 1936-1938. She also lived in Beverly Hills, California in her later life. She was married three times, the third of which took place in 1970 to Charles Melhorn. She was also married to an Alfred Jaretzki Jr. in Baltimore sometime before that. She was widowed at least once. Many of the documents also concern a Paula Ungar, later Kaufmann, her mother. She was born on 27 July 1885 in Vienna, Austria. She was in New York in December of 1940, but it is unclear when she travelled there or if Lotte went with her.

RG-56.01.01, Letters from Lotte, 1947-1949

This is separated by person and arranged by date as best as possible.

<p style="margin-left:.5in;">

RG-56.01.01.01, The first set of letters is sent from Lotte’s farmhouse in Connecticut at the end of 1947 and into 1948. The person’s name is “Pabsi.” Lotte is constantly concerned about this person’s health. And in a few letters, she refers to “Mother” and calls Pabsi her brother. It would then follow that “Pabsi” is her brother John in the U.K., who was struck with polio and paralyzed, but learning to walk again. He is attempting to get a visa to come to the United States. However, in a few letters, she refers to “John” and his health; therefore, it may be that some of the pages are out of order or in the wrong pile or that Pabsi is simply another sibling with an ailment. Also mentioned in the letters are Lotte’s second husband (or boyfriend) Dick, who is a writer, and her first husband, Alfred, who is referred to as a “fool” and resides in New York.
