Abstract

Largely the documents of this record group reflect the activities of the US military administration at the close of the war and in postwar period until and after the establishment of Federal Republic of Germany.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This record group contains official publications issued by the Allied military authorities. These documents vary by content and form. Included are guidelines and instructions for military and civil administration and reference materials in relation to the former Nazi authorities. It also is comprised of documents on the German administrative structure during the war; postwar documents issued by the Allied and the new German administrations; maps of Germany and the neighboring regions; and documents related to the Allied-administered and -authorized wartime and postwar publications.

Materials in this record group include official documents, books, booklets, maps, photographs, and newspapers. Some of the materials are digitized.

This Record Group comprises the following collections: US Military Command, wartime and postwar documents; DP camps and Jewish affairs; Documents regarding the Surrender of Germany and civil affairs; US Military Government documentsof the US zone of occupation of Germany, 1945 -- 1948; Collection of military maps of Germany and adjacent regions.

Biographical Note

US Military Government in Germany (MG) operated as military and civil government, overseeing the German municipal authorities.

It dealt with political, military and economic situation and developments in the US zone of occupation.

Among its numberous tasks were denazification, procecution of National Socialists crimes, assuaring economic stability, organizing and subsidizing displaced persons camps and running exchange of prisoners of war and displaced persons.

The other tasks and agendas included organization medical and hygiene facilities, vetting German prisoners of war whether they belonged to NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers' Party) and to the military and police organization deemed of criminal character, such as SS, SD, Gestapo and SA.

Kurt Wittler’s correspondence and documentation from the earlier days also shed light on American intelligence activities in relation to the German Army in 1944 and 1945.

The Information Bulletin was a bi-weekly magazine published by the US Military Government in Germany. It was intended to provide authoritative information concerning the policies, regulations, instructions, operations, and activities of the US Military Government and affiliated organizations. This document contains two issues. Issue 142 includes a detailed map of the occupied zones of Germany. Issue 145 contains an article on the creation of the Bonn Constitution titled “Constitution-Making at Bonn” accompanied by a photograph.

The subject of this bulletin is “Progress of women’s activities throughout the zone and report of the first conference held in Frankfurt, January 13 and 14, 1948.” This organization came about when several wives joined their husbands after the war in occupied Germany and attempted to help displaced persons and various other post-war issues. The organization worked closely with the German Red Cross to provide support and aid. The bulletin reports their efforts and the situation in Frankfurt.

This document was dated on May 6, 1948 and addresses the problems related to the Displaced Persons Camps. Displaced persons were being taken advantage and in addition they were viewed as second-class citizens within the camps. This memorandum also illustrates how to help displaced persons and raise public awareness. The document encourages members of the council to support local Displaced Perons camps in their pursuit of normal and artistic expressions.

This document is an immediate press release from Allied (U.S.) administration regarding the results of the U.S. Military Court at Dachau and the charging of Ilse Koch (wife of Buchenwald commandant Otto Koch) and thirty other defendants.

The results include that no evidence of Ilse Koch's alleged obsession with furnishings made of tattooed human skin.

Additionally, 22 death sentences, 5 life sentences (including Ilse Koch), and four 10-20 year sentences were result of U.S. Military court at Dachau.
