Abstract

A combination of photo-documents depicting the liberation of Paris as well as Nazi-German atrocities in German-occupied and controlled countries

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This record group is comprised of photographs--depicting the French forces fighting the Germans in Paris, the aftermath of Paris' liberation by the Allies, and German atrocities in France and other European countries--and publications. The photographs within this record group primarily comprise of two collections: photographs produced by the LAPI French news agency, circa 1944; and photographs of Paris Liberé (Free Paris) produced by the CAP (Photo Art Company) for the Allied Command.  The news agencies responsible for the publication of these photographs emphasized the documentation of the French Forces of the Interior (F.F.I.), a resistance organization affiliated but not part of the Free France Forces organized and commanded by Charles de Gaulle.

The publications in this record group are a public announcement of the anti-Jewish restrictions and measures perpetrated by the Nazi regime in German-occupied France; and a publication compiled by the Center for Documentation of the Contemporary Jewry entitled, The Jews Under Occupation, 1940-1944, which contains information about the period of Nazi-German rule in France with special emphasis on the Jewish plight.

The photographs and publications in this record group showcase the role of the various French resistance forces in liberating France from German occupation. Materials in this record group are digitized.
