Abstract

RG-28, Dachau Concentration Camp and Memorial Site, 1941 -- 1946.

Documents from the camp commandant office and the documents relate to the postwar memorialization of the campsite

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This record group is comprised of materials related to Dachau concentration camp, documenting the administrative aspects of the camp authorities and its personnel; the murderous activities undertaken in the camp; and post-liberation documents which provide evidence of Nazi crimes and postwar trials of the camp personnel.

The correspondence within this record group include letters between the Gestapo in Munich, as well as other German police and security agencies with the Office of the Dachau camp commandant. Additionally, there are also the reports issued by the Dachau Commandant Office. These reports deal with daily activity, including the executions carried out for the Soviet Prisoners of War.

Other documents originate with the Allied military administration. For example, these such materials shed light on the murderous activities of the Nazi security agencies, in the concentration camps and prisoner of war camps, specifically regarding the mass killings of the Soviet (Russian) prisoners of war in October-November 1941 and April-May 1942. These documents, originating from the three different offices--the Commandmant Office of the Dachau concentration camp; the office of the Stalag VII A in Moosbourg; and from the office of Criminal Counsel Weyrauch--do not reveal the causes for the daily extermination of the Soviet (Russian) prisoners of war, mainly young soldiers, on the grounds of the Dachau concentration camp.

The linked documentary, within this record group, is streamed from the Film and Video Archive of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and is titled Atrocities at Dachau.

Materials in this record group include reports by the Special Services of the U.S. Seventh Army; diaries and testimonies; official documents; photographs; and a linked documentary from USHMM.

Collection Historical Note

The security police carried out ongoing investigations at the prisoner of war camps: Stalag IV A, Stalag VII A, Stalag VII B, and Stalag Frt. 304. Upon the completion of the investigation, the charges were pressed and submitted to the Gestapo main office in Munich. The orders of liquidation (executions) were issued either by the Gestapo office or by the SIPO (Security Police). The Dachau Commandant Office executed the orders, while the camp personnel perpetrated mass killings. Then this office submitted the lists of the executed back to the Gestapo Office in Munich, providing time-related details of the executions. In the documents available to us, there are no indications on the incriminating charges or statements about the official sentences. It is remained unknown why that many Soviet prisoners of war were condemned to death.

Biographical Note

This record group combines records originated from the Gestapo and the Commandant office of Dachau concentrtion camp, as well as documents produced by the US Military Goverment with regard to investigation of Nazi crimes against humanity and peace

The Deutsche Ausrüstungswerke (DAW; literally the German Equipment Works) was a Nazi German defense contractor with headquarters in Berlin during World War II, owned and operated by the Schutzstaffel (SS). It consisted of a network of requisitioned factories and camp workshops across German-occupied Europe exploiting the prisoner slave labor from Nazi concentration camps and the Jewish ghettos in German-occupied Poland. DAW outfitted the German military with boots, uniforms and materials on the eastern front at a windfall profit, provided wood and metal supplies, as well as reconstruction work on railway lines and freight trains.

The business enterprise was founded in May 1939 and was in operation until 1943. About 15,500 concentration camp prisoners died at DAW due to heavy work loads imposed by the contractor and the inhuman working conditions "calculated not just to cripple their bodies but also to plunge them into a state of perpetual terror." DAW operated several businesses in the Dachau Concentration Camp, Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, Auschwitz, where forced labor was used. Work was later expanded to Majdanek concentration camp, KZ Lviv (Janowska Road Camp), Stutthof, and other camps.

This photo-album entitled Deutsche Ausrüstungswerke. GMBH, Werk Dachau is a collection of photo-documents reflecting the DAW production of bakery products, timber materials, furniture and compact wooden cottages by the organized work force and technical staff of this labor camp, located in the town of Dachau.
