Abstract
This Collection contains Jewish religious texts published in East Central Europe and in the United States over 18th – 20th centuries
Scope and Contents of the Materials
This record group contains Jewish religious literature, spanning almost 200 years. One of the oldest artifacts in this record group is a prayer book, dating back to the end of the 18th century. Other interesting artifacts are the original Torah scroll inscribed in 1831 in the Czech town, Kostelec nad Orlice, which stands out for its history; and the Megillat Esther scroll created in circa 1786 in East-Central Europe. This record group is also comprised of Jewish prayer books; Talmudic literature writings on Jewish philosophy; Jewish sacramental objects, such as shields and crowns for Torah, menorahs, hannukiyahs, Sabbath candles, mezuzahs, and candelabras.
Some texts have been either partially or fully digitized.
Collection Historical Note
Biblical, Talmudic, Sabbath, Festivals, and every-day prayer literature vary by time and place of publication. The oldest editions are printed and published in Germany and the Netherlands in the late 18th century. Jewish religious texts published in the United States date back to the mid-19th century. There are several religious and historical texts published in Polish and Lithuanian provinces of Russian Empire, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An encyclopedia-like edition of the Babylonian Talmud in twelve volumes was published in Germany in 1930-1936.
