Abstract

Auschwitz State Museum and postwar commemoration of the Holocaust

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This record group originates from post-war commemorative efforts to instill the history of the most notorious German death camp into people’s memory. The materials in this record group speak to two major themes: post-liberation evidence illuminating the camp organization and function; and materials collected and annotated by the Memorial Museum of Auschwitz. The Memorial Museum of Auschwitz conducts ongoing research, systematically adding new documents and artifacts to its collections. Within this record group is also the Posner family collection of post-war photo documents regarding the camp; a large number of photo-documents, depicting sub-Carpathian Jews arriving to Auschwitz-Birkenau, as well as the selection process; and scholarly works of Halina Wrobel, Danuta Czech, and reproductions of documents related to the year, 1943.

Materials in this record group include photo-documents of the camp's operation, postliberation, and the postwar period; publications; original documents; and the copies from the original documents. Also included is a documentary from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Film and Video Archive entitled, Auschwitz is Liberated. This record group is partially digitized.

Collection Historical Note

Largely, this record group contains postwar photo-documents and publications. Some photographs were taken at the time of the camp’s operation, while the others are post-liberation pictures. There is also a documentary from the USHMM Film and Video Archive under the title Auschwitz Is Liberated.
