This Record Group comprses various by content and time materials related to the dimplomatic and humanitarian activities of Dr. Julius Kühl, Polish diplomat in Berne, Switzerland in the wartime and post-war period.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The materials in this record group relate primarily to Dr. Julius Kühl's wartime service in the Polish consulate in Berne, Switzerland. These documents shed light on his activity, often done in cooperation with Jewish and other refugee organizations, with whom he provided aid to refugees and internees in the German-occupied countries and in other neutral countries. Also included in these materials is information about Kühl's efforts to rescue Jews from Poland, Hungary, and Romania. A good portion of the record group consists of correspondence with the Polish government in exile. There are documents in this record group that are issued by the Polish government in London, as well as reports of the Polish resistance organizations. Also within this record group are documents on the resistance movements, which include reports, correspondence, and underground publications issued by non-Jewish and Jewish resistance groups and organizations in German-occupied Europe.
Collection Historical Note
This record group spans from the European prewar period, extensively covering the period of war in Europe till the 1960s in North America. The documents in this record group also shed light on the Ukrainian-Polish-Jewish relations in the German-occupied Poland.
