Abstract

Novyi Chas (The New Time), Ukrainian periodical published in Lviv (Lwow) under unrelated political entities.

Publication commenced in Lviv in 1923 by the Ukrainian Military Organization (UVO). It was funded by Ukrainian Diaspora in the US and Canada. The periodical was under the editorship of Zenon Pelenskyi and Dmytro Paliiv.

Novyi Chas changed the trend from a radical to centrist and since 1925 the publication was associated with the Ukrainian National Democratic Alliance (UNDO). The editor remained Dmytro Paliiv.

Since 1926, Novyi Chas was purchased by a Ukrainian publisher Ivan Tiktor, who on its basis created a conglomerate of Ukrainian publication in East Galicia under the cumulative name The Ukrainian Press.

The last issue of Novyi Chas appeared on September 2, 1939.

The Tiktor family moved to Krakow.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This Collection reflects a relatively radical oriented group of the UNDO in regard to Ukrainian geo political discourse in interwar Poland, the Ukrainian political agenda in the interwar Poland and Ukrainian relations with other national minorities, more protruding the Jewish political stand. Novyi Chas (The New Time), associated with the UNDO, perhaps was more oriented to a popular views. lesser concerned with the politics of centrist national Ukrainian establishment.

Collection Historical Note

Novyi Chas was a popular edition and as such intended on popularization of Ukrainian national thought to Ukrainian population of East Galicia and other ethnic Ukrainian territories controlled by mainly by Poland. Additionally, to a nationally acclaimed agenda on anti-Polish statehood stand and national Ukrainian aspiration of independence, this publication reflected on international and local news. Its reportages and analytical article, although often carrying nationalistic banners and bearing rather negative Jewish stereotype well reflected for these very reasons on mundane Ukrainian politics and popular perceptions of the others. I compared with Dilo (the Deed), a consolidated by the UNDO media-voice of Ukrainian centrist national-democrat, the circle of Novyi Chas (the New Time) was a rather radical stand in regard to the Ukrainian national agenda and in relation to the Polish administration and Jewish- Ukrainian discourse and Jewish national narrative.

Novyi Chas claimed to be a national edition, expressing a popular views of Ukrainian society, not necessarily of its political elites. It distanced from overtly nationalistic organizations and their programs thereof, as well as it confronted a Ukrainian socialist-radical newspaper, Hromadskyi Holos and strongly opposed Ukrainian communist movement and its periodicals.

Editors, for a short time this post held D. Paliiv and for the rest of publication’s circulation it was Ivan Tyktor (Tiktor), the publisher and the editor. This newspaper was published by the Association the Ukrainian Press, owned by Ivan Tiktor.
