Abstract

This Collection comprises photographs taken by German military photographers in the aftermath of Babi Yark Massacre in Kiev, perpatrated on 29 -- 30 September 1941.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

These five photographs reflect the aftermath of the massacre that is the view of the ravine, as well it shows German soldiers, Ukrainian policemen who cover the victims with soil and sand. The other photographs show victims' cloth in abundance. Ond photograph shows the German officers standing on the edge of the ravine.

Collection Historical Note

This is a collection of the photo-documents depicting the tragedy of Babi Yar. The photographs were duplicated with the permission and copyright clearness of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research.

The Hamburg Institute for Social Research is an independent private foundation whose scholarship is focused on both contemporary history and the social sciences. Founded in 1984 by Prof. Dr. Jan Philipp Reemtsma, it currently employ's around 50% people with roughly 50% working in the research fields of sociology and history. The institute publishes a bimonthly journal called Mittelweg 36 and has its own publishing house.

The institutes journal was first published in 1992 and allows readers to follow ongoing research projects at the institute. In its first decade the journal has garnered interest not only in the academic community but also has a number of non academic readers.

In the late 1990`s the institute began a controversial exhibition titled "War of Extermination: Crimes of the Wehrmacht 1941-1944" which toured Germany until 1999.
