This document is a photograph of American journalist and 'Righteous Among the Nations' recipient, Varian Fry, walking along the streets of Marseilles, France.

Varian Fry is best known for his efforts to rescue anti-Nazi refugees from German-occupied France, or Vichy France, from 1940-41.  After German occupation in France, Fry was sent to France by the Emergency Rescue Committee, a private American relief organization, to conduct document forgeries and other actions that would allow for the emigration of many labeled as anti-Fascists, Jewish and non-Jewish, enemies of the Nazis.

In his effort, Fry aided the refuge of around 2,000 persons, including distinguished artists and intellectuals.

circa 1941
